Wi-Fi® – Cellular integration, more than just data off-loading.
Narayan Menon, InterDigital’s Vice President, Research and Development, presented a new vision for industry-wide seamless integration strategies at the Wi-Fi Global Congress in Seoul, South Korea, on June 27. This conference focused on the development and monetization of ubiquitous, seamless Wi-Fi solutions, featuring topics such as Wi-Fi monetization and business models, Wi-Fi roaming and interoperability aspects, Wi-Fi offload, Hotspot 2.0 issues, small cells, policy etc. Participation in the conference was diverse, ranging from cellular operators to Wi-Fi hotspot providers, infrastructure vendors, device and connection manager vendors, etc. The event also had significant Asian presence – companies from Korea, China, Malaysia, Indonesia, Philippines etc.
Mr. Menon outlined the network architecture and standards-based solutions for prioritizing and seamlessly managing traffic across disparate access technologies, including Wi-Fi, 3G and LTE. The presentation, “Effective Wi-Fi and cellular network integration: Alleviate congestion and enable cost-effective service delivery,” demystifies emerging strategies such as application-based offload, policy-driven traffic segregation and bandwidth aggregation.
For those interested in the history of the technologies as well as current and future strategies for integration, InterDigital also published a new technical white paper on Wi-Fi/Cellular integration: “Cellular-Wi-Fi Integration: a comprehensive analysis of the technology and standardization roadmap.”
