Based on the foundation of current video coding and distribution standards, the France-based 3EMS project funded by the Brittany Region aims to deploy the first end-to-end 5G Versatile Video Coding (VVC) chain to achieve the goals of reducing video traffic and energy consumption while also limiting network congestion.

An innovative research collaboration between partners InterDigital, INSA Rennes (IETR), Enensys, and ATEME, the project targets video delivery services based on the latest generation 5G mobile networks within the broader global context of reducing the environmental impact of video consumption.

Specifically, the 3EMS project explores four key areas: the state-of the-art VVC video compression standard, the use of broadcast and multicast techniques on 5G networks, the use of AI techniques to optimize video signal quality, coding, and reproduction, and the reduction of energy consumption to prepare, distribute, and restore video content.

During this webinar, representatives from 3EMS partners InterDigital, INSA Rennes, ATEME, and Enensys will each outline their contributions to the research collaboration, and present findings on the project’s efforts to reduce video data traffic, reduce energy consumption in the VVC video chain, and limit congestion on networks broadcasting video.
