Mobile World Congress 2017 is just around the corner, and InterDigital is once again thrilled to showcase our contributions to the mobile industry in Barcelona, Spain. InterDigital will be represented by a number of our experts in IoT and 5G, who will be operating demos, participating in conferences, and hosting panels throughout the week of February 27 – March 3.

This year, we've upgraded to a brand new space – Hall 7, booth 7C61. Our beautiful booth is fully updated with contemporary meeting spaces, demo displays, and a modern grass wall emblazoned with an illuminated InterDigital logo.

See below for a comprehensive list of all the exciting events we have planned!

DEMOS

Remote Surgery

Two players compete in an entertaining game of "remote surgery" – one player with a low-latency 5G connection and a second player with a slower (higher-latency) 4G connection. Players interact with the four challenges (modeled after surgical tasks) through a pair of 3D video goggles and a 3D video camera, providing the "remote surgery" effect. This 5G use case will highlight the capabilities of 5G-Crosshaul technology with InterDigital’s EdgeLink™ platform to support the demanding requirements of 5G traffic.

Crosshaul with EdgeLink

The Transport Team will install InterDigital's EdgeLink™ platform that includes three mmW nodes each with redundant antennas to create a small mesh network, matching the configuration that was recently used in the 5G-Berlin Field Trial as part of our participation in the EU-funded 5G-Crosshaul H2020 project. In addition to remote surgery traffic, the Crosshaul system over EdgeLink™ will service Fronthaul and Backhaul traffic flows, matching expected 5G network levels.

5G Access Demo: Latency Reduction in Multi-hop Communication Systems

This demo will show the benefits of InterDigital's Fast Forward technology versus conventional Packet routing implemented in a 3 node mmW wireless network. The platform was developed using Xilinx FPGAs and Infineon BGT radios, as well as InterDigital's physical layer design capable of high throughput and ultra-low latency.

Next Generation IP Networking & Personalized Virtual Reality

Showcasing the performance gains for operators achieved through our Next Generation Networking platform, FLIPS, we will have 30 to 50 users accessing a particular video at roughly the same time, who will experience the potential for latency reduction. While standard IP routing technology would lead to individual streams being sent to each client (resulting in a linear cost increase for operators), our FLIPS solution will deliver a single video stream to all clients, resulting in a performance gain that equals the number of viewers, therefore significantly reducing the costs of transmission for operators.

Participants in the second part of this demo will experience VR in a more individualized way than ever before. Our personalized VR platform is for people to experience the virtual reality and stay connected to the real world at the same time. The platform makes use of next generation video and network technologies to overcome technical challenges and significantly improve personalized VR experience.

IoT Solutions

InterDigital will present four demos powered by its suite of IoT solutions, driven by its oneMPOWER™ standards-based IoT platform and wot.io™ integration framework. They will have a heavy focus on smart cities areas and key strategic parternships including system integrators like Harman, our oneTRANSPORT™ initiative partners, and security solutions providers.

Contextual Driving Platform

As cars become more and more autonomous, the software in the car needs to replace human senses and perceptions with automated means to continuously assess, perceive, and respond to risks on the road. InterDigital's Innovation Partners in collaboration with IHMC will present their Contextual Driving Platform, which aims to demonstrate cooperative sensor data fusion techniques based on data from on-board sensors and V2X communications for situational awareness. Visitors can experience a replication of the real world experience with the platform through a virtual reality driving game at InterDigital's booth.

SESSIONS

5G Impact
(Featuring Fred Schreider & Bob Gazda)
March 2, 2017
11:30AM – 1:00PM CET
Hall 4, Auditorium 5

InterDigital Works to Advance the IoT and STEM Education with High School Students

Science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) education is vital not only for the success of the wireless technology industry, but also for future generations to be encouraged to grow in new directions. InterDigital is committed to the advancement of STEM education and is always excited to pursue new opportunities that support our local communities. Thus, we are thrilled to share that our Internet of Things (IoT) business unit recently sponsored a set of IoT kits for a high school program with which one of our consultants, Nadine Manjaro, is involved.

In October 2016, Nadine presented to a group of STEM Themed Institute students at New Brunswick High School in New Brunswick, New Jersey. New Brunswick High School provides students with the chance to learn in smaller learning communities, which are split into four overall “Themed Institutes,” including STEM; Fine, Visual & Performing Arts; Law, Human & Public Service; and Humanities.

Nadine, an alumnae of New Brunswick High School, was inspired to pursue her career in engineering after professionals came to the school when she was attending to share their love of STEM with her and her classmates. Her story helped her connect with the students at the school, whose population is over 90% minority students from lower-income backgrounds. As an immigrant, Nadine overcame a number of challenges on her path to engineering success, but her commitment and passion for STEM enabled her to earn undergraduate degrees in both Industrial Engineering and Economics, as well as a master’s degree in Engineering Management.

Nadine’s presentation and the positive feedback it received was the catalyst that inspired her to develop a program that introduces students to the IoT and create a dialogue that highlights the merits of a STEM-related career. She is fiercely dedicated to encouraging the next generation to pursue STEM careers, and hopes to replicate her experience with other lower-income high school students as an extension of her work in IoT. Nadine shared this enthusiasm with InterDigital’s IoT business unit leaders, and they readily jumped on board to sponsor IoT starter kits in support of the cause.

The goal of Nadine’s project is to give students a hands-on demonstration of IoT in hopes of generating interest and motivation to pursue careers within the growing STEM field. InterDigital celebrates Nadine’s efforts to help the local community and is proud of her support of furthering STEM education. We are excited to see what great stories and conversations come out of this initiative!
