Past Projects

InterDigital has a long history of supporting Department of Defense (DoD) projects and government communication needs. Tracing back to the 1980s, InterDigital established bullet-proof secure and mobile communications equipment at the Reagan Ranch and supported rapid communications systems in Kuwait following Operation Desert Storm. Over the years, InterDigital has contributed to multiple government projects as a subcontractor and commercial off the shelf (COTS) supplier.

More recently, InterDigital’s government contracts have supported U.S. Army research around coexistence of commercial and DoD communication systems across multiple frequency bands, U.S. Navy research regarding utilizing mmWave technology and 5G, solutions for emergency services using 5G communications, the U.S. Navy’s Mobile User Objective System (MUOS), various Army tactical communications systems, and several other projects across the DoD.

Today, our focus is centered on open source 5G solutions that align with DoD 5G initiatives. InterDigital has collaborated on multiple platforms to facilitate a flexible, open-innovation framework for government and defense efforts.

InterDigital’s government research projects have included:

InterDigital was an early contributor to the U.S. Navy Naval Information Warfare Center Pacific (NIWC Pacific) Mobile User Objective System (MUOS). Originally developed by the Navy’s Space and Naval Warfare Systems Command (SPAWAR), MUOS is a communications satellite system that supports a worldwide, multi-service population of users in the ultra-high frequency (UHF) band. InterDigital was a provider of COTS equipment to the program, as well as a contributor of WDCMA technology to enable communications between commercial and military systems.

InterDigital has worked on multiple projects on behalf of the United States Army Combat Capabilities Development Command Command, Control, Communication, Computers, Cyber, Intelligence, Surveillance and Reconnaissance Center (CCDC CSISR Center), formerly the Communications-Electronics RD&E Center (CERDEC). These projects have included research into the dual use of 3GPP technology for both commercial and military use, the development of cost effective communication systems and techniques for mmWave communication systems operable in contested/congested environments and in both stationary and on-the-move (OTM) conditions, and the development of an emulation system capable of deploying a full Long Term Evolution (LTE) Fifth Generation (5G) architecture.

InterDigital has worked on multiple projects on behalf of the U.S. Navy’s Office of Naval Research. These projects have included the development and demonstration of Artificial Intelligence (AI) methodology and deep learning Digital Signal Processing (DSP) software and firmware structures for signal recognition and reception that improve the data rates sustainable in the presence of clipping and strong fading. InterDigital has also worked on improving intraship communications and signal transmission utilizing 5G technology, as well as utilization of 5G technology for emergency communications.

InterDigital has been an integral participant in several National Science Foundation (NSF)-funded wireless R&D programs, such as the Platforms for Advanced Wireless Research (PAWR), Cloud Enhance Open Source Defined Mobile Wireless Testbed for City-Scale Deployment (COSMOS) and the Platform for Open Wireless Data-driven Experimental Research (POWDER).
