How InterDigital is Leading the Path to 6G

March 2026

InterDigital Comms

For more than five decades, InterDigital has helped define what each new generation of wireless technology makes possible. From the earliest days of cellular communications to the global adoption of 4G and 5G, our research has consistently laid the groundwork for transformational change. Today, as the industry turns its attention toward 5G-Advanced and 6G, InterDigital is once again leading – advancing the research, contributing to standards, and enabling technologies that will unlock a new era of AI-enriched, immersive, and intelligent communications.

6G will not simply be “faster 5G.” It represents a fundamental shift in how networks are designed, how intelligence is distributed, and how quality of experience is delivered. InterDigital’s future-looking research is already introducing the core innovations needed to expand network capacity at unprecedented scale, natively integrate communication and computing, and deliver consistently high-quality experiences for emerging services – from immersive XR to generative AI-driven applications anywhere, anytime.

Innovating for our 6G Future

Wireless innovation does not happen in isolation. It is shaped through a complex global “network” that includes researchers and engineers, device makers, infrastructure vendors, operators, academia, governments, and standards organizations. InterDigital plays a central role across this entire ecosystem.

Our researchers and engineers hold leadership positions across pre-standards alliances and global standards bodies, including the Next G Alliance, ETSI, ITU, IEEE, and 3GPP. Through these roles, we help guide early technology exploration, build consensus on viable approaches, and translate advanced research into interoperable global standards. This close coupling of research, standards leadership, and ecosystem collaboration ensures that InterDigital’s innovations are not only visionary but also practical, scalable, and ready to power 6G from day one.

Expanding Network Capacity with Near-Field and Extreme MIMO

For decades, Multiple Input Multiple Output (MIMO) technology has been the backbone of wireless capacity growth. Each generation has pushed MIMO further: from single-user MIMO in 4G, to Massive MIMO and multi-user beamforming in 5G. As traffic demand accelerates and new immersive devices proliferate, 6G must go even further.

InterDigital is pioneering innovations in near-field and Extreme MIMO, enabling a new “distance-domain” approach to spatial multiplexing. By leveraging very large antenna arrays operating at higher frequencies, particularly in the upper mid-band, near-field allows the network to focus energy more precisely across both near and far users. This dramatically increases spectral efficiency and enables massive scaling under heavy cell utilization.

The result is a step-change in area traffic capacity – delivering roughly 10× generational gains and enabling scenarios where hundreds of users can simultaneously experience instant-on 4K video, immersive XR, and mobile AI services in dense environments. These innovations form the capacity foundation required for 6G’s most demanding use cases, from city-scale immersive experiences to AI-driven services.

Service-Aware Radio Access: Designing Networks Around Experience

While raw speed and peak data rates will continue to improve, 6G will ultimately be defined by quality of experience. New devices, like lightweight smart glasses, and AI-assisted applications are changing traffic patterns in fundamental ways. Instead of primarily consuming downlink content, these applications generate bursty, delay-bound uplink traffic that must be delivered within tens of milliseconds to support real-time AI inference and immersive interaction.

InterDigital’s research in service-aware radio access is reshaping how wireless systems respond to these demands. By making the network aware of application context and service requirements, it can dynamically prioritize resources, detect uplink data bursts, and provide granular QoS guarantees that match each service’s needs.

This approach enables multiple users to simultaneously enjoy rich, real-time immersive experiences – whether navigating a city with AI-assisted contextual overlays or collaborating in shared XR environments, without compromising consistency or efficiency. Service-aware RAN transforms the network from a best-effort data pipe into an intelligent system optimized around user experience.

Converging Communications, Computing, and Intelligence for Generative AI

Perhaps the most profound shift in the 6G era will be the convergence of communications, computing, and intelligence. Generative AI is rapidly becoming pervasive, driving explosive growth in traffic, data, and compute demand. Yet today’s systems force difficult tradeoffs: large cloud-based models deliver accuracy but suffer from high latency, while smaller edge or device-based models offer responsiveness at the cost of capability.

InterDigital is leading research into a new 6G integrated computing service, where GenAI workloads are dynamically distributed across devices, edge infrastructure, in-network compute, and the cloud. In this architecture, latency-critical decisions move closer to the user, while accuracy-critical processing remains distributed across the network. Communication and computing QoS are optimized together to balance end-to-end latency, accuracy, and resource efficiency in real time.

This convergence enables entirely new classes of shared, synchronized experiences, like multi-user immersive XR environments where physical and digital realities blend seamlessly. As network conditions change, the system adapts, reallocating compute and communication resources to preserve quality of experience. In 6G, intelligence becomes native to the network itself, unlocking GenAI at scale in ways that are simply not possible with today’s architectures.

Building the Foundations of the 6G Era, Today

InterDigital’s leadership in research areas like near-field and Extreme MIMO, service-aware radio access, and GenAI convergence reflects a broader truth: the foundations of 6G are being built now.

By combining deep technical research with active leadership in standards and pre-standards bodies, we are helping ensure that 6G delivers on its promise: not just of higher performance, but of richer experiences, greater intelligence, and meaningful impact for people and industries worldwide.

This is how we innovate today, and empower tomorrow.
