With the growth rate of new-device mobile data traffic significantly greater than the growth rate of users, Wi-Fi wireless data delivery currently accounts for 20 times more of data delivery than cellular systems. Wi-Fi wireless data delivery is expected to increase exponentially through 2017. This paper provides an overview of InterDigital’s 5G Carrier Grade Wi-Fi (5G-CGW) vision to address the expanding Wi-Fi usage and describes technologies that can address the need for cellular-like quality, robust deployments and airtime efficiency.
