Global Standards Are The Core of Our Business
Innovation only matters if it reaches the people who need it. That's why we devote years of engineering cycles to global standards bodies, contributing thousands of inventions that shape the specifications behind wireless, video, and AI technology standards. As one of only a handful of companies worldwide engaged at this level, we help define the standards that guide device and network design across industries and generations.
Only the best technical solutions are selected by member companies of SDOs to be incorporated into a final standard. Standardized technologies help lower barriers to entry for new market entrants, enable companies that implement these technologies in their products and services to benefit from greater economies of scale, and they give implementers access to innovations they don't have to develop themselves. InterDigital and others invest in and carry out the research, so implementers don't have to.
InterDigital's Role in Standards Development
For wireless and video, global standards give manufacturers a common blueprint for designing products and services—so consumers can connect to a network or stream video seamlessly, no matter the location, device, or operating system. These shared specifications form the foundation of the connected ecosystem that billions of people rely on and that drives trillions of dollars in global economic activity. Standards in which we participate are also the product of an open, collaborative global system which means that anyone can use the technology, in contrast to closed, proprietary innovation ecosystems.
At InterDigital, our researchers and engineers address complex challenges in areas like 5G, Wi-Fi, and advanced video compression. We play an active role in standards bodies by contributing innovations, leading technical discussions, and helping shape the specifications that will define the industry's future. We are one of just a handful of companies who are leaders in and contributors to cellular wireless, Wi-Fi, and video decoding standards. Our research provides a foundation for implementers, and others are able to build new devices and new services.

SDO Leadership Positions We Hold
We aren't just part of the process; we help steer it. InterDigital participates in more than 100 standards development organizations (SDOs) and holds over 100 leadership positions. Over the past two decades, our engineers have authored thousands of contributions that define global wireless and video standards, from 4G and Wi-Fi to 5G, 6G, and advanced video codecs that power 2D, 3D, and immersive video experiences. This unique dual leadership in both wireless and video now extends into AI and machine learning, enabling breakthroughs that will transform how networks and devices connect, communicate, and deliver experiences.
SDOs We Participate In
Among the many organizations we contribute to are IEEE, IETF, DVB, 3GPP, ITU, MPEG, ETSI, ATIS, ATSC, SMPTE, and ISDB-T.

SDO Leadership Positions
Our leadership positions include RAN WG2 Chair and SA6 Chair in 3GPP.
