InterDigital, Philips, and Technicolor collaboration recognized for Advanced HDR solutions for broadcasters and streamers

A technology collaboration between InterDigital, Philips, and Technicolor, the Advanced HDR by Technicolor® solutions have been awarded the esteemed 2023 Digital Media World Silver Award for Streaming.

InterDigital contributes cutting-edge innovation and research collaboration to the Advanced HDR suite of high dynamic range (HDR) production, distribution, and display solutions that leverage machine learning technology to maximize image quality and enhance consumer viewing experiences. Specifically, our contributions to Advanced HDR solutions enable HDR and standard dynamic range (SDR) content to be effortlessly captured and produced using a single workflow, which empowers service providers and broadcasters to deliver superior visual experiences with uncompromised HDR content that is also backward compatible with SDR-only devices.

The Advanced HDR suite of solutions is comprised of two major components, the Intelligent Tone Management (ITM) tool and the Single Layer HDR (SL-HDR) tool. The Intelligent Tone Management (ITM) tool provides a dynamic, tunable, real-time solution to up-convert SDR content to HDR with full freedom and flexibility to manage contrast, brightness, and color saturation. The other component, SL-HDR, is a dynamic and tunable tool that implements the ETSI SL-HDR standards to generate and deliver a single, consistent, and high-quality broadcast stream from any mix of input content across a wide range of HDR formats. Single layer HDR1 (SL-HDR1) transforms HDR input streams into SDR-plus-metadata streams, and thanks to its unique backwards compatibility feature, even consumers who do not have HDR devices can still enjoy the highest quality SDR experience.

The Digital Media World awards celebrate cutting edge solutions and services that help broadcasters, service providers, producers and other industry players overcome challenges in the always-evolving content production and distribution sector. The Advanced HDR by Technicolor® solutions were recognized not only for their support in the production, distribution, and consumption of the highest quality video content, but also their ability to create HDR and SDR content in a single stream, which significantly reduces the bandwidth required to manage the proliferation of encoded video content.

Our Advanced HDR solutions continue to support higher quality video and greater audience engagement for broadcasters and streamers.
