Dr. Chitrapu discusses how policy enforcement beyond the core network further enhances user experience and network performance.

The Policy Control Conference - held this year in Amsterdam, April 24-25 - has been growing in size: Policy Control and real time charging is definitely an important area to operators. InterDigital was one of the event’s sponsors and Dr. Prabhakar Chitrapu (Senior Principal Engineer, InterDigital) presented on the company’s Smart Access Manager solution and mobile offload via policies on the server and the device.

The big talk at the conference was around value-based services, especially video. Although operators have started moving away from tiered pricing, it seems like many believe that they are not moving fast enough to offer bundled packages and attempting to offer/price value-added video-based services.

Other value-based examples include multiple devices (e.g. smartphones and tablets), tethering, happy hour, turbo boost, zero charging for specific websites/services, roaming packages, and multiple subscriptions.

Video over wireless is growing every day, and you can tell from the Policy Control conference that operators are thinking hard about how to handle it, deliver it, and manage it.
