InterDigital’s John Cartmell presents paper on future network architectures involving converged Wi-Fi/femtocell deployments at LISAT2012, the annual conference of the Long Island section of the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE).

The converged gateway features “local IP flow mobility”, a function that selectively offloads certain traffic to specific Wi-Fi-enabled end-users, resulting in an increase in capacity of the area serviced by a femtocell. Operators and network infrastructure providers are working to deliver more capacity and improved user experience by aggregating networks and pushing traffic to the edge of the network, and our proposal highlights a simple and effective way of achieving this while mitigating technology and deployment issues. Read more about InterDigital's Smart Connections technologies.

The IEEE is the world’s largest professional association dedicated to advancing technological innovation, with more than 400,000 members in 160 countries. The IEEE Long Island section has about 4,000 members, and serves an area from Nassau County to Suffolk, NY. The 8th annual Long Island Systems, Applications and Technology Conference (LISAT2012) was held on Friday, May 4, 2012 at Farmingdale State College. InterDigital has provided sponsorship to the conference since LISAT’s inception in 2005.
