This month, we were pleased to commemorate the official opening of InterDigital’s Melville, Long Island office. In attendance were InterDigital’s engineers and members of the executive committee alongside local government leaders and academic partners to experience InterDigital’s research expertise and the outputs of our collaborative partnerships.

We are glad to return to an area and community that fosters our engineers and their innovation impact, and were proud to celebrate alongside Francis Martin, District Coordinator for New York’s 1st Congressional District, and representative on behalf of Congressman Nick LaLota.

About our Melville Office

InterDigital’s Melville office is home to roughly 25 colleagues who contribute to InterDigital’s innovation, initiatives, and impact. This cohort of colleagues joins our global employee base spread across the U.S., Canada, France, UK, Finland, and China.

Long Island has a rich history as a center of technological innovation and high-tech industry contributions and holds an important place in InterDigital history. For many years, the Long Island region has been home to pioneering companies in aerospace, defense, and telecommunications, which has created a robust ecosystem of skilled professionals, educational institutions, and research facilities. In fact, in 1992, when our company was known as International Mobile Machines Corporation (IMM), we acquired Long Island-based companies SCS Mobilecom and Telecom that were innovating in foundational broadband CDMA technologies. The integration of CDMA and TDMA expertise from the two companies inspired our current name, InterDigital, and shaped the foundation for the company we are today.

Our Research and Innovation

The innovation and expertise within our Melville office is critical to InterDigital’s technological excellence and our strategic business growth. Among our Melville engineers, their research priorities include next-generation Wi-Fi, enhancements to the cellular 5G standard, and leading-edge 6G research. In addition to wireless research in 5G and 6G, and Wi-Fi standards, Melville will also serve as a hub for corporate development activities, including business development for our video technologies and products.

The office location is advantageous in supporting our many collaborative research projects with esteemed universities like NYU, Princeton, and Northeastern. These academic collaborations help address complex technological challenges while grounding InterDigital's cutting edge research in the latest scientific achievements, which can be commercialized through our contributions to standards.

At the Office Opening House, we were proud to showcase demos, presentations, and posters highlighting the fruit of our academic partnerships with NYU, Princeton, Northeastern, UT-Austin, and Indian Institute of Technology- Kanpur (IIT-K). These posters and demonstrations introduced our advanced research in federated learning and scalable AI in wireless, digital twins for wireless channel prediction, 6G latency reduction, near-field MIMO for future wireless communications, advanced CSI feedback, and more.

We were also excited to share some of our leading-edge research in AI, showcasing AI reinforcement learning for 5G signal discrimination. We demonstrated the application of our AI solution to drive efficiencies in modulation, or the fundamental technique that supports data transmission over the air interface to enable wireless communications.

As a research company, we take great pride in our engineers, our innovation, and our partnerships – our office opening allowed us to blend these principles in this important new space. We believe our investment in Melville underscores our dedication to engineering and innovation excellence and we hope our new office will be a positive presence in the community.
