MIV: The MPEG “Metadata for Immersive Video” Distribution Format

Volumetric Video enables users to experience the sensation of depth and parallax both with synthetic and real content. Unlike flat 2D video experiences, volumetric video is much larger and cannot be streamed with current codecs. InterDigital’s contributed work on the MPEG Metadata for Immersive Video (MIV) distribution format enables both the creation of volumetric video and the requisite formatting for its distribution. Volumetric videos require the capture of real video through camera rigs, the development of computer-generated content, the creation of a composite film sequence using VFX tools, the proper data encoding and delivery for the interpolation of a video’s view to create a smooth, unbroken rendering of immersive content from the user’s perspective.
