Carrier-grade Wi-Fi – the next generation enhancement to Wi-Fi?
On June 24th, InterDigital’s Bob Gazda, Senior Director of Technology Development, participated in a webinar conducted by RCR Wireless along with industry experts from Ixia, Republic Wireless and Senza Fili Consulting. The dynamic panel discussion surrounded the opportunities and limitations of carrier-grade Wi-Fi as well as security issues for evaluating Wi-Fi offload strategies and how service providers can monetize Wi-Fi. Prior to the webinar, Mr. Gazda joined RCR Wireless’ Martha DeGrasse to discuss these topics in more depth. The interview served as background for the featured report, “Strategies for Effective Wi-Fi Offload,” that RCR Wireless released on June 25, 2015. Similar to other industry leaders, InterDigital has worked extensively on the integration and coexistence of Wi-Fi and cellular networks. As stated in the report, “solutions that combine Wi-Fi and cellular may ultimately serve users and operators best.”
Currently, InterDigital offers its Smart Access Manager (SAM) solution to improve traffic management across cellular and Wi-Fi. SAM provides intelligent network selection based on operator provisioned policy, Hotspot 2.0 parameters, user preferences, and network conditions.
