InterDigital Engineer Key Author of 2017 Journal of Communications and Networks Best Paper

Cloud Radio Access Network (C-RAN) is the visualization of base station functionalities by means of cloud computing, and it is considered to be one of the key forward-looking 5G technologies. It also was the focus of a research paper, co-authored by an InterDigital engineer, that was recently awarded the 2017 Best Paper by the Journal of Communication Networks (JCN)!  

JCN, a bimonthly journal published by the Korean Institute of Communications and Information Sciences (KICS) with the technical co-sponsorship of the IEEE Communications Society, is committed to publishing high-quality papers that advance the state-of-the-art and practical applications of communications and information networks. The subjects covered by JCN include all topics in communication theory and techniques, communication systems, and information networks.  Annually, JCN selects the top paper among all JCN publications throughout the previous year to be awarded the prestigious Best Paper Award.

InterDigital’s Dr. Onur Sahin collaborated with Prof. Osvalda Simeone, New Jersey Institute of Technology; Dr. Andreas Maeder, NOKIA Networks; Prof. Mugen Peng, Beijing University of Posts and Telecommunications; and Prof. Wei Yu, University of Toronto; to produce the 2017 award-winning paper titled, “Cloud Radio Access Network: Virtualizing wireless access for dense heterogeneous systems.” The paper provides a concise overview of the research on C-RAN with emphasis on fronthaul compression, baseband processing, medium access control, resource allocation, system-level considerations and standardization efforts.  

The paper was originally published in the April 2016 JCN special issue on Cloud Radio Access Networks, which aimed to address fundamental research issues regarding the analysis and implementation of C-RANs with emphasis on the interplay between wireless interface and the fronthaul network. The authors will be presented with the 2017 JCN Best Paper award at the IEEE International Conference on Communications on May 22, in Paris, France.
