Our research on two-dimensional, conventional video compression enables better bitrate efficiency and high-resolution 4K, 8K, and Ultra-HD content. We advance recognized codec standards, including:

  • HEVC: High Efficiency Video Coding (H.265)

Our contributions improve intra- and inter-prediction, streamline signaling, and minimize redundancy between frames. These innovations achieve better compression ratios, enable significant bandwidth savings, make video streaming and social sharing practical at scale, and take download times from days to minutes.
3D Immersive Codec Technologies

3D Immersive Codec Technologies

Newer codecs designed for 3D video enable immersive content, including volumetric video, extended reality, and telepresence. InterDigital innovation has helped compress these videos for scalable 3D and XR distribution. Our work is standardized in several immersive standards, including:
  • MPEG V3C: Video-Based Visual Volumetric Codec (ISO/IEC 23090-5)
  • V-PCC: Video-Based Point Cloud Compression (ISO/IEC 23090-5)
  • MIV: MPEG Immersive Video (ISO/IEC 23090-12)
  • MPEG Haptics
We are researching technologies that make immersive formats possible, including depth estimation from camera rigs, multi-view and depth coding, video- and geometry-based compression of point clouds, and unified formats for meshes and animation.

AI-based codecs are an emerging field that leverages machine learning for dynamic compression. We are helping define the future of these high-efficiency, high-reliability compression methods with leading standards bodies, including:

CompressAI is our open source testing platform for AI-based codecs, designed to simplify the development process and speed up innovation. We have also collaborated with SiloAI to create CompressAI-Vision, an open source extension of CompressAI focused on machine vision applications.
